In reply to paragraph 2 of your Despatch

No. 344 of the 16th. of last October, I have the honour to

50044 refer you to my Despatch No. 481 of the 5th. ultimo, from

which you will observe that as soon as Mr. Mudie's services

can be dispensed with in connection with the Praya Reclamation

there is much special work for him to do.

With regard to the questions of account,

etc., to which you allude in your Despatch under reference,

the Director of Public Works reports that, as measuring and

estimating must be largely done by an Engineer, the clerical

and accounting work must also be carried out under his super-

vision, and that Mr. Mudie, having been connected with the

work for some 10 years, possesses the requisite information

to enable him to deal with the matter.

I may add that Mr. Mudie's health has

broken down and that he will be compelled to take leave next

Spring. He has been medically examined and the Doctors are of

opinion that it is doubtful whether he will be fit to return

to
